Born in Brittany, France, 
Noël Nouet (1885–1969) was a poet and artist whose lifelong passion for Japanese woodblock prints began in early childhood. 
His mother had inherited a collection of Utagawa Hiroshige’s ukiyo-e prints from Gustave Duchesne de Bellecourt, the very first French minister to Japan.
Captivated by Hiroshige’s vision of Japan, Nouet finally arrived in the country in 1925 to teach French at the Shizuoka Higher School. 
In his spare time, he wandered the rapidly changing streets of Tokyo, capturing its fleeting beauty in exquisite fountain pen sketches.
A fateful connection changed everything when one of his students in Shizuoka turned out to be the son of Teiichi Doi, the owner of the prestigious Shin-Hanga publisher **Doi Hanga-ten**. 
Upon seeing Nouet's sketches, Doi was deeply impressed and proposed transforming them into traditional Japanese woodblock prints. Brought to life by Japan’s finest carvers and printers, this collaboration birthed a masterpiece that beautifully fused Western pen work with traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
The very ukiyo-e prints that traveled to France at the end of the samurai era came full circle, inspiring Nouet to journey to Japan and give rise to a new era of woodblock artistry.

ノエル・ヌエット（1885–1969）。
幼少期、母が初代駐日フランス公使から相続した
歌川広重の浮世絵を見たことで、日本と版画への
強い憧れを抱きます。
1925年に来日し静岡高校の教師となった彼は、
東京の街並みを万年筆で描き溜めていきました。
転機は、教え子の実家が新版画の
名門「土井版画店」でした。
ヌエットのスケッチに惚れ込んだ店主・土井貞一の
打診により、日本の最高峰の職人技術と西洋のペン画が
融合した、新たな木版画の名作が誕生しました。
